Marataba - The Details
Marataba Safari Lodge offers two luxury lodges, one which is child friendly, and the other which is an adult-only camp.
-
Marataba Safari Lodge - The Lodge has a contemporary feel and design, but embraces the dark woods and open style architecture of traditional safari. The rooms are spacious, with huge bathrooms, inside and outside showers, freestanding bathtubs and a large dressing area with his and hers sinks. Each room overlooks the mountains on the Southern border of the reserve and all have a beautiful wooden deck out front from which to admire the views. The main area also overlooks the mountains and has a couple of very spacious areas to relax. The camps often plays host to impala and vervet monkeys who wander through as you enjoy your lunch. There is a large pool too which is a great place to cool off in the midday heat. The food is superb, as to be expected in South Africa, and is seemingly almost served constantly. One truly great aspect of the lodge, is that children of all ages are welcome. Those too young for a game drive can be left with one of the utterly brilliant babysitters whilst parents can enjoy some peace and quiet. The babysitters will even watch the children in the room, if mum and dad would like dinner alone. And for during the day, a kids club full of activities and things to watch can be accessed at will.

Marataba Mountain Lodge - For those wanting an adult-only lodge, Marataba Mountain offers a refined and intimate setting in which to enjoy a fine safari with some exceptional service and hospitality. Also boasting beautiful views from the glass-fronted rooms and from the main areas, the views are only exceeded by the excellent standards set by the staff. The addition of a sleep-out treehouse adds to that special occasion feeling and the open air boma is the perfect place to recall the day's events.
The private reserve is over 23,000 hectares and is shared only between the two camps. To give an idea of scale, if both lodges were full, there is still over 1,000 hectares of private reserve per guest! It is bordered by the Marekele National Park and together they form a truly vast haven for wildlife. Game viewing is superb, with the 'big five' strong regulars on game drives. Rhino in particular, both black and white thrive here due to fantastic anti-poaching efforts. Cheetah are also regularly spotted as well as a vast array of antelope, hippos and of course plains game, including some very curious giraffe.
Game driving is the best way to see the reserve in its entirety, and the guiding is of a very high standard. Also on offer are walking safaris and a boat safari, aboard the 'Miss Mara' which is a great way to explore the river banks and watch the kingfishers dive towards the water. As the reserve is private, there is also the ability to enjoy night drives, often continuing past 8pm should you wish it to.
