Machaba Camp - The Details
Machaba Camp is located in the Khwai area of the Okavango Delta bordering the Moremi Game Reserve. This is an extremely good area for game-viewing with a great diversity of game, including lion, leopard and wild dog.
The big earthy firepit acts as a focal point for the camp, spread out over eight double tents and two family tents, meaning the maximum capacity is 24 people.
Unlike many of the glossy Okavango Delta options, Machaba is owner-ran and you can tell: it’s a camp with a big heart that goes the extra mile. While a bigger company might miss the details which make a safari special, Machaba is the kind of camp that has got that personalised edge, setting it apart from some other options.
Contrary to the Okavango Delta’s price tag – which is probably the steepest in Africa, and only growing – Machaba is relatively good value for money compared to its glossy neighbours.
The dining area is a candlelit, white tablecloth affair set out in a romantic open space with the earth under your feet. This is not the height of safari opulence, but a barefoot luxury experience many safari-goers tend to prefer.
It also benefits from an isolated plunge pool set away from the main area with deck chairs, making for a peaceful escape.
The camp’s décor is a mixture of greens, beiges and black with safari tones throughout and comfortable furniture. In the rooms, you are greeted by safari-standard glamping – meaning you will get a huge bed, ensuite facilities, as well as a freeing outdoor shower set in the middle of the bush.
Kwhai reserve benefits from brilliant resident wildlife, including the big 5 and great concentrations of lingering wild dog, so you don’t need to go too far for adventures. The surrounding area can be explored on foot, by 4x4, or in a serene mokoro ride.
Machaba, despite its obvious luxury is still an affordable camp. It is a fantastic option for those who are suckers for luxury but don't want to spend huge amounts of money. The waterhole provides a fantastic safari experience from the luxury of your own tent, adding significantly to the appeal of the camp.
