Set on reclaimed farmland, the substantial Okonjima Game Reserve is home to the Africat Foundation, a major animal rehabilitation project. Amongst other activities, guests are offered the opportunity to follow radio-collared leopards with telemetry, search for white rhino on foot and head out at night to find brown hyena.
Situated halfway between the capital Windhoek and Etosha National Park, is the 22,000 hectare Okonjima Game Reserve, home of the AfriCat Foundation famous for rehabilitating cheetahs, wild dogs hyaenas and leopards and crucial for the welfare of carnivores in Namibia. Since 1991 they have managed to rescue, rehabilitate and release over 1000 predators back into the wild.
Okonjima higlights the importance of conservation and tourism working hand in hand. Whist staying here there are unique opportunities to see rehabilitated carnivores in their natural environment. There are a plethora of activities on offer where guests get the chance to see how conservation continues to be of utmost importance to the safe-guarding of Africa's most precious animals.
The guides here are full of enthusiasm and knowledge, be it in the birdlife, the flora or the conservation initiatives behind your activity. Although it doesn't feel as wild as some parks in Africa, Okonjima is a leopard photographers dream due the close proxitmy one can get to the carnivores whilst still being in their natural enviroment.
Okonjima: Where to Stay
There are a number of different places to stay at Okonjima. here is accommodation to suit all budgets, from a private camp site to real safari lodges, but wherever you stay on Okonjima, you will be guaranteed an African safari to remember.
If it’s a luxury, exclusive safari you are looking for, then Okonjima has a Villa and Bush Suite where you will be truly spoiled, with your own chef and safari vehicle.
Their Bush Camp provides a real authentic safari experience, being small and intimate, whilst Plains Camp offers a very good value alternative.
Okonjima works perfectly well as part of a self drive as flights can be tricky depending on where you are coming from.
