If you want that classic elephant with a Kilimanjaro backdrop view, then Ol Tukai is the place to go. But be warned: this isn’t a safari lodge but a hotel, with 80 rooms. So if you’re looking for that authentic safari experience, then you’d be better looking into Tortills.

Ol Tukai Lodge - The Facts

Set in Amboseli National Park and right at the foot of Mt Kilimanjaro, Ol Tukai is a good option for those who really want to see the region and crave a comfortable place to relax at the end of the day. The problem with this size of hotel however, is that it could be anywhere, and doesn’t exactly scream safari dreams.

Part of a safari’s charm is in the beauty of small camps, which become homes away from home for guests, who also get to know the staff really well, and might even make life-long pals. Some people return year after year to their favourite camp in Africa, because they fall in love.

That’s not to say hotels can’t always be equally special, but they aren’t as in keeping with the spirit of safari: campfire tales, eco lodges, quiet comings and goings, and leaving no trace.

Saying that though, if you’re after a solid lodge that’s not under canvas - with more amenities like a pool and spa - then perhaps a stop at a hotel might just suit you. You can get all that hotel-style luxury at Ol Tukai Lodge for half the price it would be in a more intimate set up.

Dinner is a twinkling affair here, and from under a wooden roof as night falls the safari soundscape comes alive. Guests can choose to go full board or half board, with prices starting from roughly $300 per person in high and peak season, so it’s a brilliant value option compared to the classic safari camp.
