Our View

Mike's Camp - formerly Kiwayu - is an Indian Ocean dream. The idea here is that sand should always be under foot, the breeze always in your hair, and immersed in its unique private location. It’s a really special place and we couldn’t recommend it enough. Its price also matches its laid back ethos.

Mike's Camp - The Facts

Set in the Lamu Archipelago on Kiwayu Island, this unspoilt area offers what is essentially a private island experience. But - wait for it - you can get this at $300 per person per night on a full board basis. There’s a reason for this price: while it’s luxurious in its exclusive location, it’s very back to basics living - but in a tasteful and intentional way.

Its no concrete policy means you will rarely find yourself without your toes in the sand here while wandering around camp. The seven bandas are spacious, and don’t have doors. It’s basically an open sleeping experience under a protective roof. While it sounds strange, listening to the buzz of nature at night, and waking to the sun and the breeze is a magical experience when you’re in this Kenyan paradise.

Furnishings are made from local materials, and every inch has the spirit of 20 years ago when founder Mike Kennedy touched down on this island and decided not to leave. Each hideaway is spacious and has a certain rickety charm that’s very atmospheric. Villagers weaved the matting in the rooms from palm trees, while a donkey transports shower water from a sun-heated well nearby. All rooms also have ocean or creek views, ensuite bathrooms and solar heated bucket showers. It’s clear Mike's Camp is committed to blending into the environment, and it does just that.

It’s got a family and safari vibe to camp, so meals are communal and guests generally muck in together. The games room - complete with table tennis, pool, darts and board games - is a nice touch and only adds to the friendly vibe. Activities on offer include snorkelling, kayaking, sailing, waterskiing, wakeboarding, kitesurfing, bodyboarding, and want yachting. Around the lodge, guests can enjoy romantic private dinners, beach walks, beach hut lunches, day and camping trips to local islands, save exploring, hikes on the island, fishing, and village visits.

While the camp sounds - and is - remote, it’s just a short speedboat transfer from Lamu, where daily flights touch down from the neighbouring international hubs.
