In the heart of Samburu on the border with the Laikipia Plateau, Elephant Bedroom is a brilliant option for those who want a splash of luxury in a great location. As its name suggests this spot is home to elephants, as well as other big five wildlife including lion and leopard. Its location on the banks of the Ewaso Nyiro River means you get an enviable riverside view from your room, while the interiors offer everything you need for a special stay in the wilderness without going overboard with decor or modcons.

Elephant Bedroom - The Facts

Private plunge pools are just one element of this 14-room lodge which sets it apart from its fellow small camp competitors. You get the luxuries you’d expect from a big hotel, but without the corporate vibe.

The lodge is made up of 12 standard tents with two deluxe ones - the latter of which have a bigger lounge area and plunge pool. The luxurious tented rooms boast dark wood floors, large beds, locally handcrafted furniture, and a stone-floored bathroom at the back. Earthy tones dominate the colour scheme with auburn, dark sage and rustic browns blending into the surrounding nature.

When not enjoying your room, Elephant Bedroom’s main area provides a unique perspective with its riverside location, as guests can lounge on hammocks and swing chairs, or mingle around the firepit for a sundowner drink before dinner. Lunch is done on the banks of the river under a canopy of trees, while dinner is an elegant affair with a touch of old safari magic, without being too pretentious or precious.

The surrounding safari area can get a little busy with vehicles, but this is a compromise many would be willing to make as luxury like this is hard to find at such a price point. Saying that, it’s not as busy as many locations within the Masai Mara, and the wildlife is the attraction in this area, as it is really brilliant.
