New Zanzibar Travel Insurance

30th September 2024

Everything you need to know about the new travel insurance requirement for Zanzibar.

Amelia Binns, travel consultant and newest addition to the Africa Odyssey team, is readying herself for a 3 week fact-finding trip across Tanzania and Zanzibar.

As she prepares for departure next month, Amelia gained first-hand insight into navigating the hot-off-the-press Zanzibar travel insurance. Often introduced for a multitude of reasons, these pre-departure admin tasks can seem daunting. To combat this, Amelia answer’s your top five questions about the new insurance.

1. What is it?

The Inbound Travel Insurance from Zanzibar Insurance Corporation is an insurance that is required for all visitors to Zanzibar. The insurance provides a 92 day cover.

2. How much is it?

The insurance costs $44 per adult, and $22 per child aged 3-17. Infants ages 0-2 years are free of charge.

3. When does does it come into effect?

The mandatory insurance comes into effect October 1st, 2024. Even if you booked your holiday before this, the insurance is still a legal requirement if you are entering Zanzibar from this date onwards.

4. Do I need to get the insurance?

The insurance is a legal requirement, and you will not be allowed entry without it. It is still mandatory for all visitors even if they have other valid travel insurance.

5. How do I get it?

The insurance can only be purchased through the Zanzibar Insurance Corporation. Securing the insurance before your travel is highly recommended, and helps to prevent travel disruptions at entry. Once you have secured your insurance, you will be provided with a QR code that you can show upon entry.

It is important to note that we still highly recommend that all travellers maintain their own travel insurance policies alongside this mandatory requirement.
