Africa Odyssey Reviews – 2024

23rd January 2024

J. Donson 8th – 16th November

Sam, there were zero glitches in the many logistics of our trip to Africa. We thank you and your colleagues for the great service. We saw an amazing variety of animals and birds. When I get a little time I will provide a few more details, plus a few of the hundreds of photos that have survived my discard pile. Thanks!

J. Dietrich 22nd – 26th October

Hi Sam,

Everything went smoothly.  Rosie, who handled the transfer at Wilson airport was particularly helpful.   Loved the plane rides to and from the lodges from Wilson. Lots of fun sitting as co-pilot with headset on listening to air traffic control.  No other passengers to and fro.

Both lodges great.  Preferred Kitich, due to its less “commercial” feel, but as you know, both Kitich and Sarara, have nowhere near the throughput as most other lodges in Africa and were both what I was looking for.
The Samburu people seem to be just who I was hoping they were.  It will be amazing if they can retain their lifestyle going forward.  Modernism is bound to rear its “ugly” head over time.
I don’t take many pics on any trip.  Just store them in the old mind.  All in all, a perfect trip.  Thank you Sam.

K. Aaron 12th – 27th October

Hi Sam,

Teddy gave us the full “package”. He strutted down the trail acting tough and then we got “the slap”.  Just on the leg.
We went fishing at Greystoke, we had sashimi and buddy, the stork, had a fish also.
Sundowners at the hippo pool was very entertaining.
There were many new experiences, Kichaka especially.  The walking safaris presented information about the trees, and animal behaviour, nothing we had heard before. And Moli… he’s quite a character.  All the other camps spoke very highly of him.
The food was incredible at the Nomad camps, there’s a rumor there may be a recipe book floating around.
The indian ocean is lovely to swim in. The Stonetown tour was okay.
We are discussing the Amazon next.  We may need to let Tanzania rest for a while.  Zimbabwe may be our next African experience.
Overall this trip was a totally different approach to being on safari and that was good.  More animal behaviour observation, more botany, more animal/nature interaction.
Thank you for putting it together.

R. Shadha 4th – 12th October

Hi Sam,

Thanks for your message. I hope your trip to Tanzania went/is going well.
It was a fantastic trip with many amazing experiences. Yes, I was able to complete all three treks…yay! In terms of difficulty, they were all comparable to the hikes I do here, which was helpful. That said, were it not for the porters, my knee may not have held up for all three. (Of course, it didn’t help that I could not convince myself to walk slowly.  I saw all of the silverbacks, and the little babies were hamming it up.  Also, I got lucky and saw the elusive Shoebill. My guide told me later that he was unable to find him on two previous outings.
Additional activities included a boat trip to Mutanda Island and bird watching on the lake during the last morning at Lake Mutanda which were beautiful.
As far as the logistics, every detail was planned to perfection and much appreciated. I’m even impressed how you managed to arrange the perfect weather.  Ideal temperatures with no rain during the treks, nice rain spells in the afternoons. I
As far as next trips, I already have tentative plans for next year. However, I now have an itch for another African safari, so I expect to plan something for the following year. I will definitely reach out to Africa Odyssey, if so!
Many thanks, again,

J. Sedler 1st – 10th October

Hi Ted,

We loved it. The whole experience was thrilling, and the trip was really well put together.

Animal highlights off the top of my head – huge wildebeest crossing, seeing a cheetah hunting, up close with leopards. Spotting a giant python!

We were particularly blown away by the accommodation at Sabora – probably one of the best hotel suites of any description that we’ve stayed in. The staff everywhere were so lovely.

And the food was incredible…..

We also really enjoyed the community visit, a chance to glimpse a bit of real life in Tanzania.

Thanks so much for putting this trip of a lifetime together. We have our eye on gorilla trekking in Rwanda

D. Mistry 1st – 10th October

Thanks, Sam,
It was incredible! Thank you for all your help organising the trip and your recommendations.
It was honestly a once-in-a-lifetime experience.
I will definitely visit the Odyssey Travels website to inspire the next holiday!

C. Graf 1st – 10th October

Hi Ted

Yes very good thanks! Haven’t stopped since we got back but we will give you a call soon.
Everything was great – including the food which surpassed our expectations!
After several hours we got lucky and saw about 7k w crossing which was very exciting. To everyone’s dismay apart from mine, no crocs around! And spotted everything but the elusive rhino!
Thanks for everything

S. Nirodi 28th September – 9th October

Hi Sam ,
I had an absolutely fantastic time- even better than I expected! Managed to catch the migration on a couple of days and lots of other great sightings. Every day was so special and I feel privileged to be able to afford such a trip. Couldn’t have asked for more.
All the camps were wonderful and service was impeccable with excellent guiding. Glad I went to 2 different camps in Ruaha as very different experiences and adventures at both. Already planning my next trip as definitely in withdrawal.
Everything worked out well and no issues at all with any arrangements. I have taken tonnes of photos so will add a few choice ones to Instagram and tag Africa Odyssey.

L. Horejs 21st September – 3nd October

Hi Sam,

We are home, getting settled, back to work and organizing and editing our 3000 photos!  We had an amazing trip which exceeded our expectations.  There was very little that was not perfect about the trip.  We saw so many animals including cheetahs in Amboseli, a leopard in Tarangire as well as elephants, zebras, ostriches, lions, numerous birds and so many different antelope species.  In the Serengeti we saw 4 river crossings (3 the first morning!), hyenas taking down a wildebeest and an elephant crossing. It was a perfect itinerary to start in Amboseli and end in the Serengeti.

T. Clark 21st September – 2nd October

Hi Dave,

We just got back from our safari and wanted to say thanks for all your hard work in planning the trip. It was incredible!

Please let me know if the the best way I can share the images.

J. Cornish  17th September – 1st October

Hi Sam,
Thanks for your email.
The whole trip overall was amazing, the Nomad North Serengeti camp & safaris were just brilliant.
Amos was our guide & again, he was top-notch.
I will call you in the next few days, I’ve lots of photos & videos.

R. Philipossian 15th –  28th September

Hi Dave,
My wife and I would like to sincerely thank you for putting together our itinerary and her planning many of the logistics. It was very seamless and easy for us and we loved every bit of it. It was truly a very special honeymoon.
Zawadi was PHENOMENAL. The place in the hotel are beautiful, but truly, what made it such a special place is the staff, they were very attentive and made sure to be there for us every step of the way to make our honeymoon special as possible.
Sayari was also beautiful! It gave us the opportunity to see a lot of game and experience, northern Serengeti to the fullest.
You really worked with me to learn what we desire and cater an itinerary that was perfect for that, so I want to give my thanks.
We will let you know if we want to plan another similar trip in the future and will recommend you to our friends.

M. Scott 9th- 23rdSeptember

Hi Sam

I am home albeit with a bit of plane flu!

I have had the most fantastic time and experienced some amazing things.  Every part of it was perfect and that is thanks to you. The flights, tent and hotels, local travel agents and drivers and guides were all excellent.  I am putting together a collage of photos which I will forward on to you.  I was also given a video of our balloon trip which you may find useful.

I cannot thank Africa Odyssey enough but a special and huge thank you must go to you.  You listened to my requirements, understood my likes and dislikes and you certainly my expectations.

THANK YOU

C. Oates 3rd – 15th September

Hi Dave,

We had a great time and everything ran smoothly, thanks.
In particular we loved the Lake Manze camp and literally upon arrival with our backpacks still on, an elephant and leopard walked through the camp.
We have 1000’s of photos to go through but will send you some because we aren’t great on social media!!!
We are already thinking about where to go next (it could be next year or the year after ) so will be in touch.
Thanks for helping.

L. Fuller 28th August – 9th September

Sam – A great trip.  You did well meeting our needs and requests.  As a sign of our satisfaction, we halve already recommended you to two other people, and will continue to do so.

T. Boudreau 17th – 29th August

Hi Dave,
Great trip, here are some quick thoughts:
Kuro is still a favourite camp, but Tarangire is getting a little more crowded.  A couple of new camps are going into the formerly remote southern part of the park.  Birding was great as always, and lots of elephants and buffalo.  We had a great view of the action as 5 lions tried to surround and kill a serval.  The serval made a stealthy escape through the tall grass.
Nomad’s Ugalla mobile camp was great. Good walking.  Our timing this year was off though.  Because the rains were heavy and stayed late there’s still water up in the miombo, so the big game wasn’t forced to come down to the river much.  We drove up into the miombo and managed to see a herd of roan and one male sable, which was worth all of the fly bites.  Birding was good.
I stayed at Chada some years ago and forgot how good a camp it is.  Very comfortable and away from other camps.  It may overtake Kuro in my affections.  We watched 6 lions hunting zebra out on the Chada Plain.  Twice a lion jumped on a zebra from the rear and twice the zebra kicked the lion off.  The lions finally gave up.
Everything went very smoothly.  Thanks for your assistance.

O. Grant  15th – 25th August

Dear Sam,
Thank you so much for your email and huge apologies for my slow reply…
We had an absolutely wonderful time in Tanzania.  They were both such special places to visit and we especially loved Ikuka where we even saw a leopard briefly, but up very close, which was a real highlight. The guides at both camps were wonderful, so knowledgeable and we learnt a lot from them about the animals and the area which was fascinating.
It was a wonderful and memorable holiday… when I have time I will sort out my photos!!  I will definitely highly recommend to friends.
Thanks for all your help with everything.
All the best,

D. Mckinney  14th – 25th August

Hello Sam,

We had a wonderful time in Kenya! The camps where we stayed are amazing. The staff in Elewana really went above and beyond in making sure that we have everything we needed while we were doing the safari. The guides were also very knowledgeable and made sure that we were safe. My husband really remembered the fact that the animals were free to roam around our tent at both campgrounds but more so in Sand River. However, we never felt unsafe because security personnel are always around to help us.

The Sand River staff gave me a wonderful birthday surprise and even the Palacina hotel welcomed me with a birthday cake, wine and flowers on our arrival in Nairobi. The The staff of Cheli and Peacock provided a very personalized service from 0ur arrival to our departure.

We will certainly remember you on our next travel. Here are some of our pictures. IThis is really a birthday to remember. Asante sana!

F. Sala  10th – 18th August

Dave, I hope you are well!

Yesterday has been a long day of travel to get here to Zuri in Zanzibar. What a beautiful place!

Everything is going very smoothly. We are enjoying it as much as we can.

As per the safari it has been the most incredible experience we have ever done. We did not want to leave and we want to go back already.

Usawa really knows how to do it! Best service and experience we have ever had! The camp was 11/10. The design was perfect! It was very remote so it really gave us the feeling that we were the only ones in the park. The tent is amazing and so the service and the guides. Game drives were thrilling! We already miss it! We would recommend this camp to everyone. Thank you for finding it for us!

We have had great sightings. Among what we wanted to see we were not able to spot only the leopard – we will have to go back for him! On the other hand we managed to see the crossing in a very remote area and we were the only car around! Amazing! See attached a short video! We tagged you in some posts on Instagram but we will send more pics!

Dave, everything was great. We had a long journey back. We are so sad to the point we wish we could go back tomorrow. Safari was the best experience we have had in our lives. I would recommend Usawa to everyone. They are top notch in every aspect and the price is worth it! What a treat!

Zuri was another great place. An oasis of peace and quiet. Rooms were beautiful and the beach was great! We enjoyed it.

You have been instrumental in building this amazing trip and in making it so smoothly for us so we are happy to do anything we can to help. We can’t thank you enough.

Thanks a lot for all the help building this dream!

J. Shaver 30th July – 27th August

Hi Dave,
So, we are back and had a GREAT time.  Kili was wonderful, and your recommendation for Summits Africa was perfect.  Great crew and extremely great accommodations with porters, outstanding food, good safety protocol, and very knowledgeable guides.  I would highly recommend using them for guests.  I summitted with no problems and Lisa had altitude issues just 600m from summit, and she went back to base camp.  No rain!
Trip to Victoria Falls was great…loved the classic hotel.  Took the helicopter tour and walking tour, and it was wonderful.  Great people and accommodations. Then off for the night in Johannesburg, staying at the Houghton Hotel and Spa.
Madagascar was wonderful as well.  It’s a trip back in time.  The lemurs were great as were other reptile and amphibian life.  Beautiful climate zones.  Connections were all good except a flight change going from Tana to Ft. Daugfin.  It was changed from an AM flight to a PM flight which meant we missed our first night at Mandare River Camp.  But they put us up in a very nice hotel in Ft. Dauphin and shuttled us to the camp at 5:30 am the next morning.  So, we really didn’t miss anything.  This was an outstanding camp. Our guide said they are going to make that flight change permanent.  So, an extra day may be needed for those who want an extra day at the River Camp.  Back to Tana for overnight at Maison Gallieni (which was an excellent property) and on to Anjajavy.  These were fantastic seaside villas, great people, wonderful food and drink, and some good walking tours.  Great place to relax.
We went back to JoBurg for four more nights and loved our stay.  We went to the Cradle of Mankind Museum and did a city tour of JoBurg (Constitution Hill) and Soweto.  These were great history lessons.
Yes, this was a busy trip and we loved the different layers.  Once again, we are and were extremely happy with this trip.  I will call you next week.
Cheers!

D. Battman 30th July – 9th August

Dear Sam,

We had the most amazing time, thank you, it really was a holiday to remember. We were enchanted by the places we stayed, the people we met and, of course, the animals. Everything worked like clockwork. We honestly don’t have a single complaint, we were so well looked after.

Dave is now in Asia trawling through hundreds of photos and once he has finished we will share some with you.

Thank you for all your organising, Sam, we loved every minute of the holiday and the experience surpassed all our expectations.

Best wishes,

D. Jordan  27th July – 10th August

Good morning, Sam,

As you can see I’m still adapting to east coast time! Our trip was fantastic! It exceeded my expectations. Thank you for all the planning to give us a trip of a lifetime.

We need to update our list of animals/birds that we saw during the trip, as well as organize our photos.

Thank you again for arranging such a memorable trip and I look forward to talking with you soon.

G. Muller  27th July – 6th August

Hello Sam,

We had a great time, very well organized, the guides were very good, the accommodations too and the balloon was super.

Thank you

E. Young 25th July – 5th August

Hey Sam

We had the best time. Thanks so much. And all the organising and admin and pick ups and everything thing was so smooth and made things so easy and enjoyable.

Thank you.

A. Thompson 18th – 28th July

Hi Sam,

Thanks for your email, hope your trip to Svalbard was amazing!

We had the BEST trip ever!! We loved every camp for different reasons and saw some amazing sights, highlights from each camp being:

Chitabe- our favourite camp for diversity of animals, we literally saw most animals on our tick off list on the first 2 safaris including cheetah, leopard, African wild dogs, hippos, giraffe, zebra, elephants, zebra, and so many more. We witnessed the kill of an impala by 2 lionesses (gruesome but we watched with baited breath), came across a pride of lions devouring a buffalo, had a wonderful surprise picnic lunch set up by a river full of hippo. Our guide Phinley was excellent and all camp staff very friendly.

Tubu Tree- incredible luxurious camp! Fewer animals here but still plenty to see including a pack of 13 wild dogs meeting, greeting and plotting the downfall of both a young and adult water antelope. Tracked a family of lions with their young cubs, took a relaxing mokoro canoe, witnessed incredible sunsets, another surprise camp fire dinner with entertainment by the camp staff and our time here led by our amazing guide Moruti

Mokete-started with the thrilling helicopter ride where we flew over a herd of about 4000 buffalo in a 3-4km line, even our pilot said he had never seen anything like it before, met our eagle-eyed, ever-smiling guide Sox who had the hardest job as he managed to show us things we had not seen before including aardvark, ostrich, civet, wild cats, wild dogs regurgitating their food for a gang of 5 cubs, up close to the buffalo herd where watched the beginning of a pack of lions hunt to kill. Not wanting to witness more death we moved away but then stumbled upon another pride including 4 cubs tucking into an elephant which had died the day before! Watched elephants from the underground hide and were surprised by a wonderful dinner set up in the bush-truly magical!

Sindabezi-a completely different experience! A wonderful camp with outstanding food! The staff here were truly exceptional and we had a wonderful time visiting Victoria Falls, Devil’s Pool, the kids did bungy and zip lining and the day ended with another surprise of sunset drinks set up on a little island. The final day was spent with white rhino in the national park.

The entire trip was fantastic, thank you for organizing such a memorable holiday and suggesting such amazing locations. Everything ran smoothly and we loved every minute! We will send some photos once we have uploaded the 1000+ images.

Kind regards

M. Gerlinger  17th July – 3rd August

Hi Sam

We had an absolutely stunning holiday. Ikuka in particular is a place like no other – it was the perfect spot to make this an unforgettable holiday. And of course all the animals we saw: big cats (lots of lions but also several leopards) were fascinating and beautiful and our favourites were baboons (the kids), the gentle giraffes (Angie) and elephants + jackals (me).

Thank you for a very beautiful holiday! We have obviously shown a couple of our 1000 pictures to some friends and I think you may have new customers coming your way next year.

Best wishes

V. Wornom 17th – 26th July

Hi Sam,

Thanks for checking in! We are indeed back and we had a great time on our trip. The biggest hiccup was a bout of illness in Cape Town, but we persevered and enjoyed the tours, and our guides were excellent. Inyati was truly amazing – we didn’t want to leave!

Otherwise, the logistics were flawless and we were very pleased with our trip.

Best,

PS – as you might recall the wild dogs were the inspiration for this trip, so enjoy the attached video of us seeing them for the first time!

J. Lucas 14th – 30th July

Hello Sam,

Please forgive our slow response!!!  Please do not read anything in the time delay other than we are playing catchup at home.

Namibia was fascinating.  We had a wonderful time!!!  EVERYTHING ran smoothly; very impressive.  Regarding any comparison between Namibia and Botswana, they are just different.  We feel the wildlife encounters are more predictable and better in Botswana.  However, we do NOT regret visiting Namibia for one second.  We really enjoyed the people; they are all proud of their country.  We are grateful for all your help putting together the perfect African trip.  Thank you!!!  Oh, I do think we want to revisit Botswana again in the future, we have not picked a date, and it may not be soon.

You and Africa Odyssey have earned our trust and admiration.  Part of that trust is feeling you will act in our best interest.  I guess I’m saying Africa Odyssey is our favorite travel company.

J. Brook 11th – 28th July

Hello Sam,

Thank you so much!

It was an amazing holiday and we absolutely loved it 🙂

We can say Ikuka was the best lodge one could ever stay in, everything was perfect there, 5 stars!

We really enjoyed Sand Rivers but felt maybe one day less would have worked given the landscape and less game viewing than Ruaha.

Fundu Lagoon was a top choice to finish the honeymoon with some relaxation. The only negative aspect was that we couldn’t swim in the beach in front of our suites given the tide and mangroves so the only possibility was to go to Misali Island.

Please see some photos attached!

Thank you so much again! It was brilliant.

D. Graham 2nd – 15th July

Hi Sam,

Well, we’re home at last, and Pamela’s suitcase, which somehow missed our final flight from Washington to Toronto, arrived in the middle of the night. We’re just awaiting the arrival of a package of souvenirs purchased in Uganda, and once it gets here we can declare ourselves fully and finally home. Well, once we complete our recovery from jet lag, that is.  😉

First of all, wow. This holiday really was out of this world for all of us. Pamela and I are used to birding-tour-level-accommodation, and obviously what you provided was well above that standard. We were blown away by our treatment at every destination, quite frankly, and the only problem as you know is that it’s too easy to get used to that. 🙂 Here are a few comments, in order.

Arrival in Dar and Serena Hotel: the transfer worked perfectly and we were able to connect with Dougal and Nuttawan in Immigration before meeting the driver, which was convenient. We arrived at the Serena to find that the others were already installed and enjoying the pool. Elliott (older grandson) was ticking new birds every few moments, it seemed. Our family dinner that night was great, and a good night’s sleep followed by what we all agreed was the best hotel breakfast buffet (or nearly so, in my case: the Shangri-La in Shanghai, where I stayed on business a few years ago, is simply untouchable, I think) we had ever seen did a lot to restore us. The airport transfer and flight to Selous were uneventful and a great introduction: some of the others had not previously done any small plane flying, and I think none of us had ever landed on a dirt airstrip before. I especially enjoyed revisiting the former arrivals hall at what is now Terminal 1, to stand again where I had stood in 2015/16 on my previous trips to Dar.

Both Safari Air Link and Coastal were excellent, and we had no issues with any of our flights. Even the one member of our party who is a bit nervous about small planes (fear of heights) agreed that the flights were super interesting. and Elliott spotted his first giraffes as we descended to land at Mtemere, which was great.

What can I say about Siwandu and Ikuka except that both camps are magnificent in their own way? Your advice was spot on, I think: the two locations provided great counterpoint, though of course there was some overlap in what we saw. The staff at Siwandu are particularly superlative. Having two vehicles spoiled us, and whether we were with Joseph or Sultani and Wilson, we really enjoyed our drives. We were coddled from start to finish, and the food was exceptional (in fact probably a bit too fancy for the teenagers at times, though the rest of us oohed and aahed every time we sat down to the table :-). The boat cruise at Siwandu was lovely. We really wanted our stay just to continue at both locations, though of course we were also eager to move on to the next stage!

The Zanzibar Palace, as I’m sure you know, is a bit quirky. The walking tour of Stonetown was outstanding despite some rain, and our guide was wonderful, especially at the end when he led us to Lokmaan when we said we wanted to go somewhere authentic for local food before departing for Zuri. We did not take advantage of the visit to Jozani, as we were able to hire a local birding guide for a full day of birding for those of us who wanted it while the rest relaxed at Zuri. Zuri itself is like a kind of tourist paradise, as you probably know, and our room was so high-tech that it was a bit daunting. 🙂 Again, the food was outstanding. After the all-inclusive drinks policy at Siwandu and Ikuka, it was a bit of a shock to go back to having to pay for drinks, but we managed to get over that tiny hurdle quite successfully.

I must admit, on that topic, that I had not grasped the fact that drinks were included at Siwandu and Ikuka, but how wonderful that was, as it made things even simpler. Mark and Chloe were super to deal with (they were in residence because their manager was off on holiday), and Chevy was very solicitous and helpful in seeing that we had everything we needed. The rooms at both camps are to die for, and the view from our balcony at Ikuka was everything the description promises.

Our final airport transfer went smoothly and your suggestion about flying to Entebbe via Nairobi was an excellent one.

I think that may be it from me. We truly enjoyed every moment of the Tanzania trip and it was well worth what we spent on it. I’m sure the memories will last a lifetime! Thanks so much for all your help and especially your advice on choosing the designations. We were really happy to have four nights at both safari camps rather than three, and the stay at Zuri was great after being in the bush for more than a week.

All the best, Sam, and we’ll hope to run into you again!

H. Hill 30th June – 4th July

Hello Sam!

We had the most extraordinary experience in Zambia.  The people at the lodge could not have been more lovely, accommodating and kind. And the meals were delicious.

I’ll send some pics soon but in short, we loved the solitude and natural setting of the lodge. The flight over the falls was squeal worthy, the hike on the Zimbabwe side was great. But my favorite was visiting the school and talking to the older kids.  Africa keeps calling me. But for now back to life and work.

Warm Regards,

J. Tozlian 27th June – 5th July

Hi Sam!

Sorry for the late reply!  Life/work has been so crazy since we got back!

The trip was so fabulous!  We loved both places so so much and particularly loved the variety between the two places you guys chose!

We feel like we saw and experienced everything that we wanted!  Just wish we had been able to stay longer!  I’m sure everyone says that though.

Thank you all so much for all of your assistance both before and during the trip!!

I still have one more day to post in my reels and then a glut of individual pics to post into my highlights. Just have to get around to that eventually!!

K. Jafroodi 12th – 26th June

Hey Dave,

Sorry for the delay here. Everything was perfect with the trip!

Definitely had a great time with the gorilla’s and chimpanzees. And every part of the trip went super smoothly!

We’re already talking about what our next big adventure could be!

Thanks again for all your help!

M. Helsby  9th – 15th June

Hey Sam,

Will reply now before I forget and get bogged down with all the work that has piled up!

What a trip!!!

Honestly, our sightings were phenomenal.  We saw at least one leopard every single day and even some days 4 different ones (including a leopard love triangle up a tree, haha)

Other highlights included:

  • First time seeing a porcupine (they are massive!)
  • Two African bush pigs
  • African genets
  • Pack of wild dogs
  • Leopard kill 20m from us
  • Lion kill 60secs before we arrived
  • Foul hooking a croc by mistake on a fishing trip

Anabezi was great, thanks for the recommendation on that camp.  Found out that mum and dad were there back in 2016 too.

Chiawa also fantastic and different.  Also, far enough the other end of the park to not be doing the same drives.

Transfers were all seamless.

No complaints, cracking trip.  More photos to follow on Insta after I’ve sorted through about 4,000 of them :-s

Gorillas and tigers still very much on the list for the future 😊

Cheers,

S. Saunders  8th – 24th June

Sam.

Thanks for a great trip.

All connections and lodging were perfect.

Animals were fantastic.

E. Unanue  8th – 24th June

Sam

Thanks for the follow up. We had a great time at the lodges and the reserves we visited. All expectations were met and exceeded.

Animals cooperated and the staff in all locations were friendly and very helpful.

We would highly recommend your services.

P. Owles 1st – 14th Jun

Hi Dave,

Thanks for the email.  We had a fantastic time in Namibia.

Firstly, ATI were excellent local hosts.  The airport transfers were great, on time and in new vehicles with helpful drivers.  The information pack and briefing that they gave us was excellen.  Our folder had loads of useful information and detailed trip notes for each day including driving directions and a map.  We had arranged for a GPS with the car which was helpful but we could have got by fine without it.  They also gave us a chiller box for the back of the car, a small ‘burner’ phone for emergencies and a first aid kit.

The car was almost new with low mileage and in good condition.  Europcar were helpful and also gave us a good briefing.  Having the security of a second spare wheel was good.  We had no problems at all even on the somewhat dodgy roads that we encountered occasionally.  Probably helps that I am used to unsealed roads here in NZ and know how to drive on them.  I don’t think we used the 4WD at all but it was comforting to know it was there if we needed it.  We did come across a number of tourists on the side of the road changing tyres so not everyone is so lucky.

The Olive Grove guesthouse in Windhoek was OK.  They were in the middle of really cold snap when we arrived and the temperature went down below freezing on our first night.  The heating in the room didn’t work particularly well so we were a bit cold which didn’t help with overall experience.  The service and the food were good.  Have to say though that Windhoek on a cold Sunday isn’t a very interesting place to be and I wouldn’t recommend anyone staying any longer than they need to.  While on Windhoek,  our last night in the River Crossing Lodge was also pretty underwhelming.  It may be closer to the airport but it is very remote up on top of a hill outside town.  You had to eat there and the food wasn’t great.  Not helped by the fact that they are constructing a new motorway which means that the access road is cut off and it is a bit of a mission to find your way there.   The redeeming feature was the great view from the terrace as the sun goes down over the city.

The lodges we stayed in – Namib Outpost, Doro Nawas, Ongava and Okonjima – were all amazing.  The accommodation, service, food, guides and general experience were all fantastic.  Each had its own special highlights but all were great.  We were fortunate that notwithstanding it was supposed to be the beginning of the high season, all the lodges were relatively quiet and often had no more than 6 or 7 guests staying which meant we got personal service.  If we had to pick our favourite would probably be Ongava because of the game viewing.  We saw black and white rhinos and lions on the game drives as well as the usual zebras, giraffes, kudu, oryx etc.  Our guide was fantastic and we had him to ourselves for the whole 3 days we were there.  The hide by their waterhole was a real bonus meaning you could get really close to the animals, particularly after dark.  I’ve attached a couple of photos taken from the hide.

We really enjoyed our trip.  Namibia provides so much variety and is a very special place, unlike anywhere else we have been.

Thanks for everything and we look forward to returning to Africa again one day.

Sam,

Sorry about the delayed response, but things have been a bit hectic since we got home. I want to thank you and the Africa Odyssey team for planning such a great trip for us. Ted planned my first trip to sub-Saharan Africa, and this Kenyan trip was equally stunning. I am not sure what I would change. Perhaps one less night in Samburu, but really all was good. We had amazing game viewing (our only miss was not seeing a rhino), and we actually made some new friends!  I attached a few pictures, but after editing I still had over 1500. Hard to pick from so many memorable images.

Thanks again,

G. Xuejiang 19th – 24th May

Hi Dave

I and my wife just arrived at Vila Rosa Kempinski Hotel. The Africa Odyssey part of our trip is finished.

I and my wife thank you so much for all of your efforts to make our trip safe and happy. All the pick-up and transfers were smooth. The camp and lodge are fantastic. We have seen so much of animals closely and so many interactions. The meals were very good and all of the staff were very friendly. There was nothing that made us uncomfortable in these 5 nights on safari. We enjoyed this Africa trip and thank you again.

Our trip has not been finished and we do hope the rest part of the trip will be as good as these 5 days. Africa has made us a sweet memory.

Have a lovely weekend.

Hi Sam,

Hope this finds you well, also.

Yes, Namibia is fabulous and we enjoyed every moment of this special one !

Indeed, the challenges remain over the long car drives which, basically, take some leisure time.

But thank you for taking care of this.

Hi Dave!

In a nut shell I can say it was great. The staff at all the camps were lovely and the guides and trackers were very good. The best game viewing was in Ra dinare and Lagoon.  Kwara had the nicest physical amenities but the game were sparse and the grass was very high.

Thanks for arranging another great safari for us!

Hi! Finally gathered pics and vids and tagged your account in my reel on IG. Such a special place! Been happy with both the Lake Manze and Nottens recommendations from you guys!

C. Didsbury 10th – 20th March

Hi Ted,

This is a belated ‘thank you’ for organising another magical trip to Botswana for me.  I can’t believe I’ve been home for nearly two weeks now!

I enjoyed all three camps and Little Vumbura remains one of my all-time favourites.  They get the balance between comfort and a sense of connection with the environment absolutely right and Sam was a fabulous and highly experienced guide.

Chitabe was pretty dry and guests who had come from Kwetsani also talked about the lack of water there.  In contrast, there was a lot of water around Little Vumbura and the Delta looked very beautiful.

One difference I noticed from previous trips – and really appreciated – was the shift away from offering a pretty full breakfast at 5:30am, which inevitably makes for a slower start to the morning drive.  Getting out before dawn led to unforgettable mornings watching lions playing, or sitting quietly as a leopard woke up and came down from her overnight perch in the tree where we’d left her the previous evening.  Breakfast in the bush, with a cup of coffee from a tin mug, was far more enjoyable than eating it in camp!  We had excellent sightings of wild dogs, watching them mating, setting out to hunt, and demolishing an impala (much to the disappointment of the waiting jackals and vultures).  We also saw a herd of sable and several pairs of wattle-necked cranes, which felt fortunate.

Jack’s Camp was something else again – definitely one of life’s experiences!  The style was too ‘heavy’ for my taste and the tents were seriously OTT, but I loved the stark beauty of the Makgadikgadi and had an excellent guide – Ali.  I was really hoping to see a brown hyena and an aardwolf and to my delight, we were able to watch an aardwolf come out of its burrow one evening and walk along a ridge before disappearing in the gloom.  I didn’t see the brown hyena this time but had fabulous sightings of honey badgers and groups of bat eared foxes – as well as time with an habituated group of meerkats.  I hadn’t expected to see lions there, but we saw two different prides, plus a pack of about 21 black backed jackals surrounding a lioness, waiting for her to finish eating.  We also had an extraordinary sighting of a very dead steinbok – the guide was able to put together the story of what had happened:  a small python had probably surprised the steinbok and started to consume it, but only got as far as the shoulders before (probably) realising that it was too big, so regurgitated it, leaving green slime all over its head. Fascinating.  And we even had the local spotted genet make an appearance on the sideboard one evening!  I left the Makgadikgadi very reluctantly indeed.

The arrangements you’d made worked perfectly – thank you.  I’m attaching a few photos to share as you wish and look forward to planning my 2025 trip with you later this year.

Hi Sam,

It was a great trip and experience, thank you!

It will also take me a while to get all the animals and vistas sorted in my memory banks 🙂

Kindest regards,

K. Gerda 7th – 19th February

Hi Sam!

We had a wonderful time on our trip.  I can’t thank you enough for all the time you spent planning for us.  It honestly met all of our expectations and more.  Every night we would say that the next day couldn’t possibly get any better.  Of course, the next day always gave us something more special than the day before.

As for the lodges and staff, they were all top notch.  We couldn’t have felt any more special.  It did take some time getting comfortable sleeping while we listened to the lions roar in camp at night :).

I think the highlight of our trip was the gorilla trekking.  There are just no words to describe what that experience was like.  From the accomplishment of the hike, to being carried across a river on my porter’s back, to sitting with the gorillas, was just amazing.  I would however recommend staying one more day there and having a day off between hikes.  We had 2 strenuous hikes and could have used a break.  Our guide tried to get an easier one for us the second day, but we were one of the youngest/fittest ones there and couldn’t take up space on an easier group.  We got so close that it took all my power to keep my hands to myself 🙂

We will definitely be reaching out about future trips.  We are talking about going back to Africa in 2 years and bringing our boys.  I think it just gets in your blood.  Tanzania and Uganda were so much more than the animals.  The people are just so special and you can tell that they love their country.  Anyways, I think we would like to try Kenya next time and maybe add on a beach vacation to it.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hey Sam,

My parents had a fabulous time and had nothing but great feedback to share! They loved the properties, animal sightings, etc… they had a hard time getting on the flight to come back!

Best,

S. Jeffries  4th – 16th February

Hi Dave,

Apologies for my delayed response.

We had an amazing trip! Everything went smoothly and we saw so many animals! I was excited to see the cats – lions, cheetahs and a leopard! We got to see a wildebeest calving and a baby gazelle’s first steps. Sol had a great introduction to Africa!

We liked all of our guides! The staff at all of the camps were great. The food at Dunia was the best of the camps.

I just finished my Facebook posting about the trip and will post some of my favorite photos on Instagram as well including you.

Best,

T. Sommer 31st January – 14th February

Hi Sam!

You have been on my mind, especially because we are so happy and grateful. In sum, it was the trip of a lifetime! Honestly, everything we could have hoped for and more. I would go back in a heartbeat… Thank you for all your attention to detail, pacing, guides, hotels, transportation, etc. We did not have a single problem the entire trip. Truly AMAZING! […]

Leaving was a sad day…. Truly, it was a trip for the ages. We are so grateful to you and our team. You have this whole experience down right, and you helped us reach all our goals, including wildlife, history, beauty, adventure, and immersion in local culture and life. I wouldn’t change a thing!

S. Legge 28th January – 9th February

Hi Sam

We had a wonderfully relaxing spoiling time on Fanjove. We were looked after beautifully, the food was delicious and our villa was kept spotlessly. Charming staff are always there to help.

We snorkeled twice a day and saw so much, we had the most amazing dolphin trip with dolphins spinning and leaping all around us and a lovely sunset dhow sail.

Our travel out and back went faultlessly.

A pretty perfect trip!

Thank you for organising it all.

P. Cropper 28th January – 6th February

Dear Sam

Had a wonderful time in Kenya. Both lodges are very good and the wildlife viewing is excellent. Very green everywhere as lots of rain before we arrived.

Features four cheetah cubs playing and five lion cubs also playing. Also huge herd of buffalo 500 approx quite incredible. Elephants in Amboseli are fantastic, never seen so many together with the backdrop of Mount Kilimanjaro.

Many thanks for arranging the itinerary so well.

Kind regards

P. Nugent 27th January – 11th February

Hi Sam,

We arrived home on Monday after a very long journey.  Our experience in Uganda was phenomenal.  We agreed that the itinerary you put together was great.  Starting with the gorillas in Bwindi allowed us to get over any anticipation and anxiety so we could relax after that. Spending time with the gorillas was a once-in-a-lifetime experience that’s hard to explain.

The other locations were excellent for viewing all the game and we enjoyed the lodges.  Ishasha was our favourite for the accommodations, food, and most of all, the lovely staff.

Thanks for your help.  We will definitely recommend you and Africa Odyssey to anyone planning a trip to Africa.  I will send you a photo of our group taken at Ndali Lodge.

Best wishes,

W. Shenfield 13th – 16th January

Hi Dave,

We had the best time. The staff could not have been nicer. We were surprised how quiet it was. Weather was great for us! Thanks for helping us with the trip!

R. Onorato 5th – 19th January

Hi Sam!!  We had an incredible trip.  Thank you so much for the amazing itinerary.

The safaris were absolutely incredible.  We saw everything and more – the guides were the most amazing hosts and guides and we built a great relationship with them, especially in Olakira and Singita – they were so informative, over the top nice, kind, and really made the trip exciting.  Highlands was a very fun lodge, with good food, Caroline was amazing.  Crater was a good first stop – a bit far of a drive, but we were also able to do a Masai visit which was very nice.  Olakira – what can I say – the best reco.  Incredible experience, amazing team all around, Christian was the best driver, Zach was the best host, the tents were beautiful, and game viewing was incredible – I am so happy we did this, we were definitely on the fence but your reco was the absolute best.  Singita – they are the best of the best – true luxury travel, better than Four Seasons – the room was insane, so nice, beautiful.  Amazing food, facility was off the charts – Richard the host was absolutely wonderful, Jafrod our driver was unbelievable – nice/knowledgeable/funny made the trip really incredible.

we thought the trip was absolutely incredible, especially the safaris, and your recommendation on Olakira was incredible – one of the highlights of the trip and so happy you pushed us to do that!  We loved working with Africa Odessey and are 100% recommending you to everyone we know and hope to be a repeat traveler with you – i just hope the above will help the next people traveling!

Hope we can stay in touch and hope we can plan our next trip soon!

D. Goodman 4th – 14th January

Hi Sam,

Both places were lovely.

Fanjove isn’t for everyone. At least in December/Jan, it’s incredibly hot in the rooms.

It is worth selecting a room that set away from the vegetation in order to benefit from some breeze into the room.

The island is beautiful though. Good for families.

I would rank the One & Only as the Worlds best hotel. It is incredible place with great attention to every detail.
